Reference information and links

Some of what you see here demonstrates the early controversies surrounding the Sullivan West high school, much of the hard feelings and us versus them atmosphere grew from these early roots.  Some of these links will take you to sites that decry the incompetence of past school boards.  These things are in the past and the future is my primary concern and should be the concern of all residents of the Sullivan West school district. I post these things to help illustrate how easy it is to find one's self, mired in controversy.  It is my earnest hope that the current board will be able to conduct their business in a respectful and civil manner.  It is obvious to everyone at this point that the responsibilities of the school board are manifold and complex.  It is therefore absolutely imperative that the communities concerned participate and contribute to the school board's proceedings.  At the very least we should stay informed of the issues involved in our schools and the policies and a direction the school Board intends to take.
There are also links to school information concerning performance, enrollment and a variety of other informational needs.

If you have suggestions for links to be listed here.  Please add them on the tell your story page.

yourtownboard.org

This website run by a local person,  is posting overviews of the local school board meetings and special sessions by our school superintendent, as well as the minutes of the meetings of the Tustin town board.  No doubt this will grow in scope and be a valuable resource to the concerned citizens of our district.

Click for a link to stories about the building. Lots of folks tried
to question the board and were stone walled.
As for the community  I guess it was all to hard to believe.

Note March 30 2002 things seem to be going as planned.
March 04, 2005 this is where the bomb apparently dropped.
Note the idea is to protect us from very high taxes yet our taxes have gone up
and as of June 2007 we have a budget excess of around $3 million, seems odd to me.

This video shows the kind of stupid behavior, you can expect from some teenagers.
and this is the kind of stuff that takes place in the larger schools were the atmosphere is impersonal and the students enjoy anonymity born of the scale of the school and enrollment.
this kind of nightmare can only be prevented with parental involvement along with community concern and involvement.

This amazing article by Dan Hearst in the Sullivan County Democratic published Friday, September 7, 2007 demonstrates the kind of problems that many of our Sullivan West School Board candidates have suggested, would come to pass. This is not an old-school,  this kind of  remediation speaks to the seriousness of the denial and the secrecy, which has and still does surrounded the construction of this school.

This site has some nice things to say about student performance,
but doesn't mention the problems you will have if you're located in the out lying areas of our school district. It also fails to mention that most of the proficiency that the students demonstrate was a product of their attendance at the Narrowsburg school and the  Delaware Valley school  prior to the merger.

Sullivan West School System

Sullivan West Central School was formed in 1999 as a merger of Delaware Valley, Jefferson Youngsville, and Narrowsburg school districts and is one of the newest schools in New York State. Sullivan West Central School enrolls approximately 1,800 students in grades K-12 and offers a variety of opportunities for academic and personal growth. Lake Huntington is the location for the new common high school building for the Sullivan West Central School District.

Sullivan West is persistently striving for educational improvement and believes that students benefit from devoted teachers that play a positive role in student development. Family and community support have been a great advantage to the new district.

The Sullivan West Junior High School was established in September 2003, bringing together the talents of students, staff, and faculty from three formerly separate school buildings into one former high school building that is well-equipped with caliber science labs, art and technology rooms, physical education facilities and computer labs.

The Delaware Valley School building opened in 1952. Delaware Valley School opened as an elementary school in September 2003 and currently enrolls about 230 elementary students.

Jeffersonville-Youngsville Elementary was originally constructed in 1938, modeled from the Governor's Palace in Williamsburg, Virginia. An addition to the building was added in 1961 and another addition completed the high school in 1994. Now, the building serves kindergarten through sixth grade students from the local community as the Sullivan West Central School District.

The Narrowsburg Central Rural School consisted of five districts when it was completed in 1929. 2004 marks the 75th anniversary of the Narrowsburg building. The original building existed in 1872 as a one room school house. Because few students went to high school in the early 1920s, there was little need for a high school, and when students started to attend high school, they congregated in the former R.C. Church, which was located where the U.D.C. parking lot exists today on Bridge Street. The first high school graduation was in June 1931.
